Are your eyeglass lenses thick and heavy? Then you probably don't like the way they look or feel. That is where high index lenses can make a big difference.
High index lenses are quite simply ultra thin lenses that focus light with greater efficiency, allowing the wearer to see clearly while reducing weight and thickness. Because they are made of newer plastics that have a higher refractive index (the measurement of how much the light is bent) than older plastic lenses or glass ones, these high quality lenses do not need to be as thick as the older lenses were . Since they are not as thick, weight is reduced, making the lenses more comfortable to wear. Also, because they are thinner, a wider variety of frame styles is opened up to the more nearsighted wearer than was possible in the past.
Another feature of high index lenses is their ability to reflect light away from the eyes. While regular glass or plastic lenses also reflect some light, it is a small amount, only about eight percent. High quality lenses reflect about 50% of the light away. While this may not sound important, consider that a major problem of driving is night vision. By reflecting away unnecessary light, the wearer is less likely to be blinded by oncoming traffic, reducing the possibility of accidents.
Available in a wide variety of prescriptions, including bi-focal, tri-focal and more, ultra thin lenses can be a great source of satisfaction for any eyeglasses wearer. But before buying them, the customer should check with his optometrist to be sure which lenses are right for him. They are more expensive than standard plastic and glass lenses, but through their lack of weight and thickness, and with the wider variety of styles to suit the buyer’s needs, these lenses can be worth the added cost.
